UniteWomen.org is pleased to announce the third of twelve featured artists in our online art show “Women’s Rights: An Artist’s Perspective“. Deborah Morbeto’s artwork is entitled ‘Measure Up’
Do I measure up? Do you? To what standard? Who is doing the measuring and why? Who gets to decide?
I began taking self-portraits in 2010 armed with a handful of wigs, costumes, props and my camera and remote. My intention is to invite viewers to think about the ways in which women can be seen. I also want to ask questions about female stereotypes and prescribed roles that women assume in our culture. The work speaks to freedoms, limitations and possibilities for women. I hope to invoke dialog that leads to strengthen understanding of the female gender as it is seen in our first world culture.
