Two weeks after Bloody Sunday, Dr. King assured a gathering of organizers, activists and community members that they should not despair because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. On March 25, 1965, having completed the third march to Montgomery, the city that gave birth to the civil rights movement, Dr. King spoke these words on the steps of the Alabama State Capitol:
“I know you are asking today, ‘How long will it take?’… “I come to say to you this afternoon, however difficult the moment, however frustrating the hour, it will not be long, because truth crushed to earth will rise again.” “How long? Not long, because no lie can live forever.” “How long? Not long, because you shall reap what you sow….” “How long? Not long, because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
This is but one day, one year, one moment in our long journey, but the end is ours, and we shall prevail. We must realize we are up against a combination of factors never before fought. Consider that our news media is now owned by 6 corporations standing behind the 1%. That misinformation is then hurled across the Internet in a nano-second to millions. We are no longer dealing with pure news. People are listening to and reading opinions yet accepting that as news. The Internet has created an atmosphere of instant gratification, instant solutions, and instant misinformation.
Taking our democracy back will take long and hard work. During this time, we will have many more votes blocked by the abuse of the filibuster. A majority in our Senate is no longer sufficient to pass legislation. Record amounts of money are being spent by a handful of individuals and corporations spewing propaganda to be consumed by a majority of our citizens.
We have to gain even more strength, determination and creativity to educate people who are either not voting or are voting against their own best interest. UniteWomen.org has successfully built a social media platform in a short period of time due to all of our passion, determination and hard work. Let us build upon this momentum by working together on a state and national level to educate and motivate our citizens to vote with the truth behind them when they enter the polling booth in November.
